Glorious Galaxy Dye + Quilt Pattern

  • by

The Glorious Galaxy Dye + Quilt Pattern is now available!

This is the first of what I hope to be many patterns that include instructions for not only sewing the quilt but dyeing some of the fabric too!

Don’t worry if you don’t know how to dye. I’ve writing the dyeing portion of the instructions for a complete beginner. You could make this as your very first ever dyed fabric! (I even used my husband as a guinea pig to make sure a newbie could do it.)

There are several pages of dyeing instructions with photos to ensure you are successful. And, if words aren’t your thing, there’s also a link to a video of the dyeing process in its entirety.

Don’t want to dye but really like this fabric? I do offer some in my shop on a made to order basis in two color choices.

Want to buy a print instead? That’s okay too! Fabric purchasing tips are included for both the multicolored fabric and the blacks.

I promise that this pattern is a lot simpler than it looks.

All you need to know is how to sew a ¼” seam! Everything else is covered in my detailed instructions.

This pattern is made from half square triangles that make up one simple block, repeated to give the illusion of randomness. I even made sure that all four points would never meet up together at any corner to reduce bulk.

The Inspiration

This quilt pattern was inspired by this quilt that interestingly enough had been made from some mistake fabric. (You can read about that here.)

I hand several people contact me about that quilt so I knew I had to make a pattern so they could make their own!

Now this pattern does come out looking a little more jumbled and random than the original inspiration, but you could recreate the effect by organizing your half square triangles and hand pick which block goes where. I made the original by using the darkest blocks on the outside and working my way lighter towards the center, but I think it could look lovely if you made it darker at the bottom and got lighter at the top too!

The Hand Dyed Version

This version was made with these fabrics:

  • Hand Dyed Kona Prepared for Dyeing (PFD) Fabric
  • Hoffman Me+You Indah Batiks Zebra Stars
  • Hoffman Bali Batik Stars Oreo
  • Andover Spectrastatic Stellar
  • Kaufman Magical Rainbow Unicorns Shooting Stars Black

The backing is a wide fabric from Andover called Dimples.

I thought it would be fun to quilt it with lots of stars!

The Print Version

This version was made using these fabrics:

  • Hoffman Digital Out of This World Galaxy
  • Hoffman Me+You Indah Batiks Zebra Paint Splatter
  • Hoffman Bali Batik Stars Oreo
  • Andover Spectrastatic Stellar
  • Kaufman Magical Rainbow Unicorns Shooting Stars Black

I used the same backing again, Andover Dimples.

I quilted this one using random wavy lines. I was really stuck with how to quilt this one until I just decided to go for it!
